RPTS Minors

The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences has four minors: Tourism Management, Youth Development, and general RPTS minor.

Course selections under each minor are for the newest TAMU catalog. We will honor all course options on the new minors below, adjustments (substitutions) may need to be submitted.

Tourism Management

Minor Code: TMGT

Tourism is one of the world’s largest and most diverse industries. This option focuses on the planning, management, development, and promotion of places and events as tourism attractions. Courses in tourism are designed to collectively build understanding about the linkages that exist between local places and cultures, host populations, and various public, private, and special interest groups. Students in this emphasis can pursue careers in private sector enterprises, government agencies, convention and visitor bureaus, and other tourism related service organizations.

Youth Development

Minor Code: YDEV

The Youth Development minor focuses on programs and services that contribute to the development of young people’s personal, physical, social and educational abilities. Youth workers are program developers, leaders and managers who need to be able to work with youth, families, organizations and communities. Coursework in this option focuses on positive youth development, program planning and evaluation, methods for working with young people, and societal factors that both contribute to and inhibit the development of young people.

Recreation Park and Tourism Sciences

Minor Code: RPTS

The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences offers a general 18-hour minor as a supplement to other majors. This minor requires RPTS 201 and RPTS 302. Student select four additional courses from a list of ten.

Eligibility

We do not have an application, deadlines, or a cap on eligibility hours. As long as you are a current undergraduate student at Texas A&M University you are eligible to pursue our minors.  Declaration of minor is made in the student’s home college or major department. Some colleges and departments outside RPTS may not permit their students to declare a minor.

Satisfactory Completion of Courses

To be awarded the minor in TMGT, YDEV or RPTS and receive transcript recognition, students must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each course listed above
